RESOLVE (2013 edition)

1) to come to a definite or earnest decision about; determine (to do something)

One of my absolute favorite things about beginning a new year is... getting a new planner! Probably not what you would have guessed, right? For me there is something seriously cathartic about looking at my past year's planner and reliving each experience. Every year is important; not just for the milestone moments but also for the day-to-day lessons.

So here I sit: cozied up on my bed, listing to my OAR Pandora station (reminiscing last February when I saw them in concert for my birthday), drinking a celebratory 2013 mimosa and smiling. As I transfer important dates from my 2012 planner to my NEW 2013 one (old school, I know!), I can't help but think, "how does it get any better?!" How is it possible that each year tops the past one, when the past one was so good to me?!

With this question on my mind I pause and realize -- it has been one month since I last blogged (not that it is any consolation... but I have been doing some journaling, which I will share more about in the future). One month?! I always hear people comment about how busy the holiday season is, but I swear this past December went by in the blink of an eye. Then it hits me...its January 1st already and I don't have a single resolution. This lover of lists, goals and vision boards has nothing -- zip, zero, zilch, nada. This puts me in a slight panic...do I not want anything out of 2013?! Am I being lazy?! Am I lacking inspiration in my life?! It is at that exact moment when I figure it out...

My resolution for 2013 is to RELAX, SLOW DOWN, CHILL OUT, and truly SAVOR EVERY DAY.

Life is going by WAY too fast for my liking. As much as I am a fan of the S.M.A.R.T. goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound), this year I don't want to get tangled up in the overly-tangible. Don't get me wrong, I will still draft up some resolutions like read one book a month, floss once a day, blog once a week, run five 5ks, TRAVEL, and go sky-diving (because Lord knows I cannot not set goals) -- but the point will be to savor the journey, not simply the destination.

I too often reward myself for checking something off my list, rather than soaking up each building block moment that brought me to the point where I can check the item off. As simple as the one above statement sounds, it is going to be a real challenge for me. "Slow" is rarely in my vocabulary -- but in a effort to be the most balanced individual I can be, I need to cultivate a side to me that doesn't simply come naturally.

So there it is, in all its complex simplicity. Here's to 2013 -- may the pure joys of each day culminate into an unforgettable year.

Good luck to you as you contemplate your resolutions. Let me encourage you to challenge yourself fully in whatever you...
RESOLVE!
