TASTE

1) to try or test the flavor or quality of (something) by taking some into the mouth
2) to eat or drink a little of
3) to perceive or distinguish the flavor of
4) to have or get experience

I will be the first to admit, I can't pass up a good deal (namely on Groupon, LivingSocial, Amazon Local, and Google Offers). Months back there was a Groupon for a $5 beer tasting at a local brewery downtown Seattle and I purchased it (actually, I bought two...because really how fun would a beer tasting be alone?). How many things can you seriously get for $5 these days?! And I love supporting local businesses -- so this was a great find!

Since I no longer work weekends (hallelujah!), I finally have time to do fun things! I figured, "what better way is there to start a new year off in celebration of weekend freedom than with a beer tasting?" Can I get a cheers to that?!

Emerald City Beer Company is a little hole in the wall (almost literally...) located in the south end of the old Rainier Brewery Building. ECB does a lot of experimenting when creating new beers, so they call their tasting room the "Beer Lab". The ambiance is that of man cave meets laboratory. With a big, flat screen TV, leather couch and XBOX you have the man cave aspect. Yet the silver accents, cement floors, and garage location gives the lab feel. Almost all of their beers are named after women (you can imagine how excited I was when I saw one named BETTY!), and the labels are cutesy pinup girls. Somehow ECB meshes these three aspects together (man cave, lab, and vintage pinup) to create a really cool vibe.

We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed (lots of Groupon users!), but we were in good company: lots people who are genuinely interesting in the art of crafting a delicious beer. As we went through the beer tasting the ECB brewer explained little nuances that separated the brews and once we tasted the four on tap (Dottie, Betty, Ivona, and Golden Wheat) we were given a pint of our favorite. And in the end, I purchased a four-pack of "tall-girls" to bring home for my household to try".

Overall, I really enjoyed doing something out of the ordinary and I would definitely be interested in going back. I am now following their Facebook page so I can track the status of the beer they are making in a whiskey barrel. They age it for over two months, and once they crack the barrel I will be back at the Emerald City Beer Lab to give it a...
TASTE!
