SWEAT

1) to perspire, especially freely or profusely
2) to exude moisture, as green plants piled in a heap or cheese
3) to gather moisture from the surrounding air by condensation.
4) (of moisture or liquid) to ooze or be exuded
5) (informal) to work hard
You may have noticed a new badge on my blog, to the right of the posts... and wondered what that was about. Well...

I am proud and excited to announce some fun news:
I am now a Sweat Pink Ambassador!

The Sweat Pink Ambassador community is:
"a place for enthusiastic, positive, inspirational people to connect and support each other in reaching their goals around health, fitness, life... and more. It's a place where we come together and celebrate what we have and reach for even more. It's a place where new friendships spark and running buddies find each other; where you'll always find a cheerleader or a word of advice."
The Sweat Pink mission:
"We believe that kicking ass is best done in pretty shoes. We've learned that real women sweat, and sweat hard. We know that assertiveness, strength, and ambition are the ultimate feminine qualities. We concede that sometimes it takes hours to get ready, but we’re also no strangers to just rolling out of bed and going. We’re convinced that we run faster in pink shoelaces. We believe in pushing ourselves, and we believe in giving ourselves a break, too. We’re all about the rush of endorphins and the thrill of the challenge. We’re all for looking great and feeling even better. We’re committed to finding our best fit, and making it stick."
This is the first blog community I have joined and I have already been inspired by these women. It is so helpful to be included in forums about running or training for a half marathons and fun to get opportunities to review health-related products. You will see me participating in these as much as I can, as well as using the #sweatpink tag on instagram.

Also, I have 10 sets of pink shoelaces that I am going to give away to girls who inspire me to keep progressing toward my fitness goals! Could that be you?

Again, I am really proud to be part of this community. I look forward to bringing you along with ride with me as I continue to SWEAT.

LOCK

1) fasten or secure (something) with a lock
2) make or become rigidly fixed or immovable

Although these pictures are late from our Mother's Day Celebration -- which is already over a month ago! -- I couldn't help but share.

We had absolutely beautiful weather as we set out to the park to celebrate Mom. We wanted a park that had water/a view, a park area (for sitting or frisbee), and a nice walk -- which lead us to Chambers Bay. Our favorite part was the pedestrian bridge because people have begun to put love locks on the cables -- almost as cool as the bridge fencing at Paris' Pont des Arts. Getting a love lock is definitely want to do someday with my sweetie and it provided some nice symbolism for our family as we talked about the love we share.

If you are looking for a park recommendation, you should check out Chambers Bay. And while you are grabbing your picnic blanket and kite, don't forget a love LOCK.

SING

1) to utter words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice
2) to perform a song or voice composition
3) to produce melodious sounds, usually high in pitch
4) to compose poetry
5) to tell about or praise someone or something in verse or song

Back in December, I managed to convince my sisters to buy Ellie Goulding with me. Although they didn't listen to much of her music, and I did barely more than they -- I still thought it would a fun concert for us to attend, just us sisters.

Over the coming months, I started to listen to Ellie more and more -- and getting beyond excited. Little did I know, my sisters were starting to feel the same way! There is something special about the quality of her artistry, something unique about her vocal range, and something praiseworthy about the variety of her songs. And, she has been popping up everywhere in the last few months: the Catching Fire soundtrack, the Diverget soundtrack, my Nike+ running app -- you name it!

Fast-forward to concert day -- my sisters met me downtown for happy hour at Dragonfish (yummy! and they have a great happy hour menu) then headed out to the theater. The balcony seats at the Paramount were general admission, so we knew we were going to have to stand in line (in the rain) in order to get good seats. Once the doors opened, we quickly rushed to the balcony where my sister snagged us front-row balcony seats!
Ellie Goulding is one of the BEST performers I have seen (besides Macklemore, of course)! I was blown away at how captivating she is and how this petite 5' 5" girl commanded the theater with even the tiniest gesture. She sang, she told stories, she played drums and guitar, but most importantly she shared her music with us. Her performance was raw and it was real. At times she invited us to jump around and dance with her, and at other points we sat at the edge of our seats with tears in our eyes as she opened her heart. It you have the opportunity to see her -- YOU MUST!

Truth be told, I haven't been able to stop listening to her since her concert. Every time I go running, I am shuffling through her music (both of my last 10ks have been fuled by Elllie) and at work I am stuck on my Ellie Goulding Pandora station. Maybe her illuminati tricks have gotten to me (ha!), or perhaps she simply possesses a voice that was created to SING.

CAPTURE

1) to take by force
2) to gain control of or exert influence over
3) to take possession of, as in a game or contest
4) to represent or record in lasting form

Today is April 1st -- April Fools' Day for all you pranksters. For me, this marks the start of second quarter, which means the first three months of 2014 have already flown by in the blink of an eye. For someone who loves to track things, the beginning of Q2 is the perfect time for me to check in on my new years resolutions:

Pray: I have shared prayer more often with my family as they have been driving up to come to Church with me as often as possible.
Run, lift, and practice yoga: I have ran my first 15K and signed up for a half (more to come on both of those!). I have added AM lifting sessions multiple days a week to compliment my evening yoga classes.
Eat clean: The majority of my meals are paleo and still having a blast trying out new alternative recipes.
Save weekly: I have been sticking to the reverse plan for the 52 Weeks of Saving. If you haven't heard of it -- check it out here! It is so simple and you end with over $1,300 put away.
Establish balance: This is not a goal that is easy measured, but I do feel like I have been keeping busy and allowing myself downtime. Also, I deleted the Facebook app from my phone for Lent -- which has really helped in balancing my time and phone usage.
Nix the negative: That is where this post comes into play! Read on!
Travel near or far: Currently, I have a few "near" places on the calendar (Minnesota in June, Las Vegas in July, and California in August). Now I want to focus on the "far".

Looking back on the first three months of the year -- I am really proud of how I have maintained my focus on my resolutions and I want to keep it up! This brings me to the #100happydays challenge I just read about.

All this challenge involves is capturing a photo of something that has made you happy each day. Surprisingly, the website notes that 71% of people who tried to complete this challenge failed, attributing a lack of time as the main for the not completing the challenge.

WAIT! WHAT? People actually think they don’t have time to be happy?

The converse side of my resolution "nix the negative" is to "promote the positive". It is all too easy to focus on what is missing, but what if we shifted our mind set and focused on what is going well? Conscious happiness, that is what will happen!

I am starting today and my 100th day will be on July 9th. Why don't you join in the challenge and make the time to welcome happiness into your life each day (click here!). I will complete my challenge via Instagram (using the hashtag #SMB100happydays) -- but you can do it with any format you desire. Can you do it? You are part of beautiful moments each and everyday, memories that ask you to CAPTURE.

RESOLVE (2014 edition)

1) to come to a definite or earnest decision about; determine (to do something)

One of my all-time favorite parts of the year is the period between Christmas and New Years. Some people love the "spring cleaning" concept -- but for me, it is now that I feel the refreshing, renewal, kick-start phase. I love cleaning out the old, organizing the new, and setting myself up for a new year.

2013 brought wonderful memories beyond my wildest dreams, really and truly. It was a year abundant in blessings, some of which I couldn't see at the time but have now come into full focus.
“Your journey has molded you for the greater good,
and it was exactly what it needed to be.
Don't think that you've lost time.
It took each and every situation you have
encountered to bring you to the now.
And now is right on time.”
-Asha Tyson

As I sat down to hammer out my resolutions, I did some good ol' fashioned journaling via Lara Casey's goal setting prompts (if you are looking for some inspiration for your resolutions -- check them out!). As I worked through the questions and reflected on the past year, I found myself really zeroing in on the idea that "now is right on time" and I ended up with more of a mantra for 2014 than a set of resolutions.

“Everything changed the day she figured out
there was exactly enough time for the important things in her life.”

Now is on time.
Be here now.

In 2014, I want to BE PRESENT and to focus on what matters most. I want to work smart and efficiently. I want to give my time to the things that keep my anchored. And I want to be true to myself.

My mantra for 2014:

BE
Pray honestly and often
Run, lift, and practice yoga
Eat clean and fall in love with water
Save weekly
Establish balance
Nix the negative
Travel near or far

I still plan on jotting down a few specific goals but for now, I am excited about focusing on this mantra. From yoga, I have learned about the strength that comes with focusing the mind -- and I am looking forward transitioning this concept from my yoga practice into my everyday life. I also was pleasantly surprised that this mantra of mine is fully comprised of verbs -- 2014 you are going to be action-packed!

Where are you at with your goal setting? Do you use a vision board? What will you give your focus to in 2014? Again, Let me encourage you to challenge yourself fully in whatever you RESOLVE!

VISUALIZE

1) to recall or form mental images or pictures
2) to make visual or visible
3) to form a mental image of
4) to make perceptible to the mind or imagination

I believe in bucket lists, dreams, and goals and in the plan it takes to make them come true. I believe that you must write your goals down, tell them to someone you trust, and most importantly you must believe in them by visualizing them.

You can make your dreams come true.
You can make things happen.
You, your mind and your heart are powerful entities
and when they are in sync, magic happens.

At the beginning of 2013, I set some big goals and lots of small ones -- I aimed to balance feeling accomplished while still pushing myself. Outside of my tangible goals, I have my lofty dreams, the ones that are closer to my heart than my brain, but are just as (if not more) important as (than) my goals.

My top three "dream come true" moments in 2013 are as follows:

Now of my top three "dream come true" moments, none of these were goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year -- none of them had an initial plan. Instead, these fall into the dream category (well...maybe not bungee jumping, but just go with it), dreams my heart visualized.

I did set a goal to go on a cruise -- and once that plan was in action I knew I needed to jump at the opportunity to make a dream come true, swimming with dolphins.

Bungee jumping was neither on my mind nor my heart at the beginning of 2013 (skydiving is though!) -- but when I was asked by a friend if I would join her in surprising one of my best friends in a group bungee experience, I agreed immediately. It was then I learned that spontaneity is an ingredient of dreams, and decided that bungee jumping could be a "stepping stone" toward skydiving (sorry Mom!).

Some dreams come out of a plan and some dreams come from spontaneous action. But there are other dreams -- that no matter how hard you visualize them, plan for them or go for them in moment -- that don't end up how you imagined. But they can still end up perfect.

Although the only time I have written about Macklemore was when I finally saw him in concert last year when he opened the Heist tour in Seattle, I have been a faithful fan of his since I was in high school. In college, I used to listen to The Town endlessly because I missed Seattle so much. Also because I was in Michigan at the time, I missed seeing him at Bumbershoot in 2009. But despite all that, I have followed his journey over the years, and I have wanted to meet him ever since I can remember. I truly cannot think of any human being I have wanted to meet more than him. I have never been a fan anything in the capacity that I am of Macklemore.

This meeting is something I have visualized for years! I pictured myself telling him what a big fan I am of him as a person -- as Ben Haggerty, the man who overcame an addiction. How much I admire his lyricism, and wish I could be half the wordsmith that he is. I wanted to congratulate him on his fully-deserved success and stand at awe in front of man that is truly dedicated to his art form. I wanted to tell him how my favorite song is Vipassana and how we love to listen to Stay at Home Dad at work. I pictured him signing my Shark Face Gang tank top and taking a picture with me.

When I met Macklemore, none of that happened.

First of all, part of my heart had already given up on meeting him -- he had become too big too quickly. Secondly, I didn't expect after JUST missing him at a charity event, that I would get a call from a co-worker a few hours later saying "I just saw Macklemore get out of the elevator at Pacific Place. Now is your chance -- get over here!" So in pursuit of making dreams come true -- I tore out of my office faster than Richard Sherman on a pick six (with or without a shoe...you decide).

Then it was a matter of tracking him down. My co-worker and I peaked in every storefront window of Pacific Place (thankfully there are not too many stores, and it is an open layout -- all the better for stalking!), keeping our fingers crossed that he wasn't doing his Christmas shopping in Victoria's Secret. We got to the top floor without any sign of him, we were getting ready to throw in the towel, besides...my phone battery was about to die anyways so "good thing" we didn't find him.

In a last ditch effort (because you don't go running through the mall for nothing...), we took the sky bridge over to Nordstrom. I was thinking about how thankful I was that my heart was finally beating normally, and not pounding in my chest when my co-worker grabbed my arm, stopped me in my tracks and said three words that made my life complete... "there he is".

I quickly went into denial, then panic and then after some social media stalking to confirm it was him -- I knew what I had to do. Despite the fact I was shaking more than when I went bungee jumping, I somehow got the courage to walk up to him and somehow I managed to forget absolutely everything I wanted to say:

"Hi...I will try not to draw any attention to you, I just wanted to tell you what a huge fan I am --" "Thank y.." "I saw you open this year in Portland and I saw you open last year in Seattle --" "Yah? Aweso..." "And I am just a huge fan I love your work I love everything you do and I love you." (WAIT...WHAT?! I BLURTED OUT I LOVE YOU?! Oh come on brain...) "I appreciate..." "And I love Tricia I met her in Portland and I told her congrats on your engagement. I am really happy for you guys." "Thank you." "Do you mind if we take a picture?" "Of course not." (Note: yes I am in italics and yes there is no punctuation for a reason. I was speaking a mile a minute and he couldn't even get a word in. Unfortunately, I turned into a typical starstruck fan.)

So really, as much as I believe in the strength of visualization -- some instances will cause it all to fly out of your ears. Thankfully despite the fact that I was talking at the speed of sound and word vomiting "I love you", he was so gracious and humble as I spoke to him. He didn't act too busy or laugh at my weirdness -- he simply smiled at me while I spoke to him and listed to me like I had the most important things in the world to tell him. And after I spilled my guts, took a picture and began to walk away -- I ran back over to him (like any normal person?!) and asked for a hug, to which he responded "Yah, absolutely".

The moral of this blog post is make your dreams happen -- whether that may be through goal setting or complete spontaneity -- and don't wait! I am such a planner, but after seeing that some of the most amazing things that happened to me in 2013 were things that did not start with a plan, I am reminded that I need to be present in the moment. As you start go map out where you want to be in 2014, I encourage you to not only set attainable goals, but really listen to you heart and VISUALIZE.

EMBRACE

1) to take or clasp in the arms; hug
2) to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly
3) to avail oneself of: to embrace an opportunity
4) to adopt
5) to take in with the eye or the mind

We are already two weeks into July -- and I haven't had the chance to recap June! I am coming to the realization that I just need to give in and embrace life as time files by. There is no stopping time and rather than wishing I could slow things down I need to receive each moment gladly and eagerly.

If you remember, May's focus was to give everything a "try" and to learn how I can better deal with "trying" situations. I want to continue that this month by embracing whatever comes at me, embracing whatever my situation is, and embracing those I love.

I embraced a lot of change in June: my car celebrated its first birthday, Sebastian started Law School, another class of graduates entered the "real world", I painted my wall (more to come on that still!), and much more...

But by far the biggest change I experienced was having my work teammate, mentor, and friend go on maternity leave.

For the majority of projects at work, Lisa and I work together -- everyday. She has taught me everything I know about working at HMG, she has trained me on everything I have learned client services related and she has sharpened me to become the Account Executive I am today. I have her to thank for my professional growth and development thus far in my career.

Not only do we work closely, but we have developed a friendship over the last year and a half that I am absolutely loving. This lady keeps me on my toes and has more zingers than anyone I know. Plus, anyone who can watch "Kittens Inspired by Kiittens" or "the falling Girl Scout Girl" daily, has a special place in my heart.

On June 24th, Lisa and her husband welcomed Hadley Makenna to the world at 8 lbs 10 oz and 20 3/4" tall. She is a beautiful, healthy baby with the longest fingers I have ever seen! I am so thankful that I could be in Lisa's life as she transitioned into motherhood and I am looking forward to watching her raise little Lisa Jr. Thankfully she sends a lot of cute pictures, which makes her maternity leave a little more bearable.

For now, I look forward to the day I get to meet LJ in person, and squeeze her in a loving EMBRACE!

STICK

1) to remain attached by adhesion
2) to hold, cleave, or cling
3) to remain persistently or permanently
4) to remain firm, as in resolution, opinion, statement, or attachment; hold faithfully, as to a promise or bargain

Four years ago I tried bikram for the first time. It was suggested to me by my physical therapist as I was wrapping up treatment. At the time my ankle had freshly healed from a flip flop accident, which resulted in a fractured bone and two torn tendons. I was itching to exercise -- me, not the runner me, wanted to run. I wanted to get my heart rate up, to challenge my body, to work out again in some full capacity. So, "give hot yoga a try" he said.

My physical therapist told me that hot yoga would do more for my weak muscles and healing tendons than anything else. I would get a cardio workout, while strengthening and toning my muscles. You know when you get the feeling something is too good to be true? Well I got that feeling -- but I was wrong.

It was true. Hot yoga absolutely blew my mind. The workout was incredible and left me feeling exhausted, refreshed, and wanting to stick to it. AND for first time students at Hot Yoga Inc., you could try 10 classes for $10? An amazing workout at an incredible price?! Wow.

Unfortunately, once I wrapped up my 10 classes -- I found out that hot yoga was way too expensive for a poor college student to afford. So we broke up, but not a day went by when I didn't think about getting back to it.

Luckily this January, Groupon came to my rescue (as it always does!): twenty classes for $20 at the same studio (different location) where I first tried bikram. I believe in serendipity -- and this was most definitely a serendipitous moment! I was SO happy to get back into the flow, so much so that before my classes ran out I signed up for monthly unlimited, and I haven't looked back.

Practicing hot yoga has changed me, without a doubt. I can see (and I have had others tell me they see it too) a physical difference in my body. I  see toning that I have not seen from any other workout. I can feel a difference in my mental strength. I feel that my mind is willing to push as much as my body is. I feel like I want to stick to whatever challenge I am facing, to persist and to succeed. I have found the combination of both mental and physical strength to simply be still, and to find inner peace. In moments of chaos, I know how to settle my soul. And most importantly, I find that I am constantly humbled in my practice.

My practice was also changed when I purchased "The Mat" from Lululemon. This mat is the most expensive one they sell -- but it is worth every penny. "The Mat" is sticky (and heavy!), so you do not have to use a towel and it wicks away sweat while you are practicing (you can see a crime scene outline of my body from shavasana, and it will disappear by the time I am in eagle). With this mat I can actually feel like a warrior, when I am in my warrior series. Cleaning is simple, with baking soda and water or lemon and water. So simple, yet such a game changer.

I really can't say enough positive things about hot yoga. I am so thankful I have a studio I love, where I want to constantly challenge myself in each class to STICK.

TRY

1) to attempt to do or accomplish
2) to test the effect or result of
3) to endeavor to evaluate by experiment or experience
4) to test the quality, value, fitness, accuracy, etc.

If May had a word dedicated to it, I would dedicate TRY. I made a concerted effort in May to try new things, try not to fall into my usual habits, and overall try to keep things simple/savor the moment (this year's theme!).

I will say I am pretty proud of all that I tried in May. Between trying my best in my 5k and 8k, trying out hot yoga sculpt (yes HOT yoga AND weights...so crazy, it's awesome), trying to help others by volunteering with March of Dimes, trying new plants in the garden and a green wall in the kitchen, I have found some new things that now I can't image living without. By trying new things I have pushed myself beyond my happy little comfort zone and into a new, better place.

Most importantly, besides all of the external things I tried in May... internally, I really made a point to accept things that were trying. I tried to have grace with others around me, even when they flabbergast me. I tried to be patient with others, even when I was rushed. I tried to be accepting of circumstances, even when they deviated from the plan. I tried to turn interruptions into opportunities. Life happens, life is ever-changing and I will continuously encounter little "trying" situations everyday. By accepting trying situations for what they are, I will work to let them roll right off my back rather than get hung up on them. They say it takes approximately 21 days to form a habit, and my hope is that by focusing on this idea for the month of May -- that I have begun to form a positive change for myself.

Take a visual look at my month below, maybe I will inspire you to give something new a TRY.

RUN

1) to go quickly by moving the legs more rapidly than at a walk and in such a manner that for an instant in each step all or both feet are off the ground.
2) to move with haste; act quickly
3) to depart quickly; take to flight; flee or escape
4) to make a quick trip or informal visit for a short stay at a place

If you recall, I briefly shared some of my New Year's resolutions back in January. One of my resolutions was to sign up for and run five 5k's. This sounded like a great prospect in January as 5k is a totally doable distance, but when April came and the first time I ran three miles was on my cruise...I knew this resolution was not panning out in the way I imagined.

See here's the thing, its not that I want to turn myself into a "runner", but I wanted to commit to running events in the future because then I would be forced to keep running in my work regimen routine. Its not like I think running is the worst thing in the world (because I know spin class is actually the worst thing in the world) but I don't thoroughly enjoy running the way I do my other workouts.

So what did I do kick this running funk?

Three things: 1) I made running work for me 2) I signed up for the Happiest 5k on the Planet and 3) I ran an 8k...

The first one sounds obvious -- but it didn't really click with me until two weeks before my first run. I needed to find ways to make running fun for me. I am not training for any crazy distance nor do I not struggle to run the 3 miles. I just dreaded the thought of running...non stop...for thirty minutes. BLECH. So I found a friend that loves running, found a route that I look forward to running and set a date (and maybe we had wine and watched a movie after, isn't that what post-run recovery is?) It is amazing how much happier I am when I run Greenlake with my girlfriend. Her love for running makes the workout actually enjoyable for me -- and by setting a date, I stick to it. Even though I don't love to run, I do love to keep my word.

Second -- I ran The Color Run. Now that I have run it, I know they aren't kidding -- this is truly the Happiest 5k on the Planet. This is also a great 5k for people like me who don't love running because all of the happiness around you completely distracts from the actual running part. Between the fun costumes, pump-up music, fun colored cornstarch color stations, and my best friend running beside me -- I didn't think twice about the three miles. If you ever have the chance to sign up for The Color Run -- DO IT (they sell out fast)! It is something everyone should do once, because its huge party! This kicked off the first of my five 5k's and I had a good taste in my mouth for what was to come (although not literally, because I literally had colored cornstarch in my mouth which did not taste good).

Now this third thing is probably going to make me sound a little crazy, "learn to like running by running more than you think you can". My crazy friend convinced me to sign up for "Beat the Bridge", which (turns out) is an 8k. Even if you knew how much I dreaded my 5k running dates, you wouldn't be able to imagine how much I was dreading this 8k. (Seriously, I tossed and turned the night before -- and I NEVER lose sleep over things). I knew I wouldn't pass out and I knew I could always walk if I need to, but the unknown of the extra two miles freaked me out. I probably can count on one hand how many times I have run more than 5k...and none of those times was recently.

Jump to race day and we are the next wave of runners -- my headphones are in, my crazy friend next to me, and there are butterflies in my stomach. We cross the start line and I keep my pace slow, tailing my friend. The more we run, the more "tailing my friend" turns into "losing my friend". Within the first mile he is out of my sight and I am running...ALONE.

This is were I started contemplating my demise. "I haven't gone too far I could just turn back", "I could just run the 5k portion and stop", etc. etc. But something in the deepest reaches of my heart wouldn't let me back down.

I may have run at a snail's pace, but I finished -- running alone. After my initial moment of panic, I found some slice of inner peace and it kept me going. Maybe my mind is getting strong from all of the bikram yoga, maybe what they say is true, "it gets easier after three miles" or maybe being stubborn came in handy for once? Whatever it was that kept me going, I am so thankful that it did because I sure am proud of myself. Finding you are capable of more than you thought is a super cool feeling.

These days, I have a much more positive attitude toward running. Although I do not have any plans for runs that are longer than 5k, I know longer distances are not out of the question for me. Thanks to everyone who helped me fall in "like" with running. I am excited to have The Electric Run, 7SAR, and Run like MADD on the calendar (maybe even the Seafair 5k?), as well as future running dates. I am pleased to be back on track with the original intent of my New Year's resolution -- to make time to RUN.

EXPLAIN

1) make (an idea, situation, or problem) clear to someone by describing it in more detail or revealing relevant facts or ideas
2) Account for (an action or event) by giving a reason as excuse or justification

Ok, ok... I definitely feel like I have some explaining to do. I was really doing well with my New Year's Resolution of "blogging once a week", right? Until now. Now we are reaching the fourth week that you have been without something to read.

So let me explain how life got really crazy busy (in all good ways).

The weekend after the Big Climb was Easter -- which meant that I was heading south to spend the weekend with my family. It was so good for me to unplug from everything that keeps me busy with my day-to-day life, and just spend time in good company.

That weekend led me into my 5 days of preparation before I headed out on my vacation! I had to prepare in three ways: 1) personal packing, shopping, and primping 2) moving 95% of my stuff out of my room because our landlords are AWESOME and they are doing a bunch of renovations (look for a future post on our Home Beautification Project) which were starting while I was on vacation and 3) getting a bunch of work done to help my team out for the five days I would be out of the office. Needless to say, there was no time to blog that week!

This leads me into my 8-day vacation -- a Mexican Riviera cruise. My vacation was everything I wanted, and more importantly -- everything I needed (future posts on this too, I promise!).

When I got back -- I hit the ground running. Right back into my busy work and workout schedule -- with the addition to helping put the house back together as the new kitchen flooring is in and our new carpets are complete. When the weekend came, I headed south (again) to celebrate the wedding of one of my dear friends from high school to her sweetheart (who I have known since kindergarten!).

That (basically) leads me to today. Life is being SO good to me with wonderful changes, new experiences, and laughter and love through it all. Please know that I have so many good things I cannot wait to share -- I just need to make some time to get it all down for you.

CURE

1) a means of healing or restoring to health; remedy
2) a method or course of remedial treatment, as for disease
3) successful remedial treatment; restoration to health
4) a means of correcting or relieving anything that is troublesome or detrimental: to seek a cure for inflation

This past Sunday I ran 1,311 stairs in 14 minutes and 30 seconds. Insane? Yes! But worth every hard-to-breathe, legs-ready-to-give-out moment as I participated in an event that is VERY near and dear to my heart.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the BIG CLIMB (Seattle) is one of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's biggest fundraising events every year. The event itself is a stair climb up the Columbia Tower - the tallest skyscraper in downtown Seattle. There are 69 flights of stairs, 1,311 steps, and 788 feet of vertical elevation. This year registration sold out within a matter of weeks, as approximately 6,000 participants gathered in the fight against blood cancers.

Last year my sister and I created "Team Uncle Tiger" in honor of my uncle who was celebrating his first year in remission from leukemia. (Side note: "Uncle Tiger" received his nickname via three-year-old Shannon, as he was wearing a Lacoste polo which obviously meant he was MY Uncle Tiger...needless to say it stuck!) The first time we participated we chose to do the "climbing" side, where the goal is simply to make it to the top. We thought that would be a good place to start. Despite the physical challenge of climbing 69 flights of stairs, you are supported by all those around you as you work your way to the top -- together. When I reached the top (in about 16 minutes and 30 seconds, of course I still timed myself), I was overcome with a rush of happy endorphins which prompted me to announce "let's do the racing side next year!"... Although I knew it would be more challenging on the timed side, I reminded myself that it would pale in comparison to what blood cancer patients, like my Uncle Tiger, go through.

(Additional side note: I will be completely honest -- I believe that no amount of training truly makes the BIG CLIMB any easier. It is simply extremely physically demanding. To prepare, my teammates and I (and supportive friends) would go out to the Howe Street stairs, the longest consecutive set of stairs in the Seattle area. I challenge you to get out and try it! You will get an amazing workout and enjoy a stunning view from the top.)

But this year in addition to the physical rigor, the racing side takes some major mental stamina. Last year on the climbing side, we were sent up in twos which allowed for some comradery as you motivate each other. But the racing side staggers entry one at a time...with most people listening to their headphones -- the combination of those two factors leaves the only motivation in your mind.

At around floor 34, I was ready to throw in the towel. I started too fast and I was really struggling with my breathing (if you run enough stairs, you will become fast friends with "the hack"). But then I remembered that I had a poster made for my uncle and I had yet to see it. With each set of stairs I checked the upcoming wall to see my Uncle Tiger smiling at me...over and over...the more floors I passed without seeing his poster, the more excited I became because"they must have put him at the top!" Once you have ten floors left they have a poster of countdowns for you. With five floors to go you can hear the music from the observatory. At three floors to go I started to run! Finishing at 14 minutes and 30 seconds (proudly just thirty seconds slower than Sebastian).

You are probably wondering about that poster that motivated me to keep pushing? Well, I never saw it. Turns out it was around floor 49 (thankfully my teammates saw it and snapped a quick picture with it), and I had missed it altogether. In the end, the point really wasn't about seeing the poster. I was being motivated by my love for my Uncle Tiger. If he could beat leukemia -- I could run 1,311 stairs.

I get all weepy just thinking about how thankful I am that my Uncle is in remission and how proud I am of my team (raising almost $2,000). In fact, I probably cried three times the day of the event. But regardless of how thankful I am or how blessed we are that my uncle was able to find a perfect bone marrow match -- no progress can be made in the success stories of others without funds for research.

Without funds, there is no research. Without research, there is no cure.

I will continue to participate in the BIG CLIMB (and other LLS events) and I will continue to help raise funds with for this VERY worthy cause. I want to hear more stories of success, like my Uncle Tiger's.

CLIMB. CONQUER. CURE.

DISTRACT

1) prevent (someone) from giving full attention to something
2) divert (attention) from something

I have been meaning to write this post for weeks! But here we are, better late than never...

In mid-February two of my best girlfriends and I road tripped our way to Yakima to meet up with two of our other besties who are living in Eastern Washington. As much as I was super stoked beyond belief to have a weekend get-away and mini-road trip with my girls, I think what made me the MOST excited was having the chance to be a distraction for our favorite med school student for the weekend.

Our future Dr. Quach does it ALL and she has been doin' it all ever since I can remember. She definitely makes my top ten list of "go-getters I am secretly a little bit jealous of". After becoming friends with her and watching her kick high school's butt, to fostering a long distance friendship as she took names in college, and now supporting her as she fulfills her dream to be a doctor -- I could not be happier to be one of her biggest cheerleaders. Let me also add, that despite the fact that she is a accomplished student, world traveler, and more, she is also one of the sweest, most down to earth and humble individuals I have ever met.

So the the name of balance, and in upholding my life's mantra "work hard, play hard" - my high school besties and I spend the weekend with Dr. Quach in the name of fun. The aim was definitely to keep her mind off of school (ok...except for when we asked for a tour of her school), from a morning at the spa and a thrift shop themed wine tasting, to a sun-shine filled walk in the foothills and a PJ party watching Pitch Perfect - we helped our girl unwind.

Here is the part where I get mushy, and say things like "you have no idea how thankful I am for my group of girl friends who are beautiful inside and out" and "we are the true definition of support system" or "I do not know where I would be with out my best friends"...but as cliche as they sound, I mean every word. I know not everyone is as lucky as I am to have such good company, so I aim to work every day to keep our bonds strong. If I meant even half the amount to them as they mean to me, I would be happy.

Dr. Quach, I am over-the-moon proud of your and your ability to stay true to yourself and your dreams. I hope as med school gets busier and more stressful, that you can think back at our hilarious moments over President's Day weekend and have a little laugh break. And when things get overwhelming, you can bet we will be right back there with you in Nola Loop, armed and ready to DISTRACT!

DAB

1) to pat or tap gently, as with something soft or wet
2) to apply (a substance) by light, short strokes to the surface
3) to strike, especially lightly, as with the hand

(Dabbing, in an artist's vocabulary, refers to applying paint in layers which contributes to the flickering effect of impressionist works.)

Again thanks to Living Social, I had the change to try out a wine and painting class. These things seem to be all the rage recently, so I definitely wanted to give it a shot. In high school, Jo and I took an art class together, so I thought it would be fun to reminisce -- this time with wine.

The adorable little studio is located in West Seattle (yes I know, everything in West Seattle is adorable and cute -- and this place is no different!), and is called Mind Unwind. Our class fee provided us with a complimentary refreshment (from the Treehouse Lounge upstairs), materials, and a 16 x 20 canvas. The theme of our painting was "Seattle Starry Night", after the famous Vincent Van Gogh piece. Its like they read my mind! I love it!

I will be the first to admit -- I am no artist. In fact, I was a little intimidated to go with Jo because she is much more artistically inclined. But once I saw the sample painting I was relieved because the content was simple. The creativity comes with the way in which you stroke and dab the paint on your canvas.

We started out with a baseline sketch of our skyline, mapping out where we want our swirls, starts, and moon. From there it just became a matter of mixing and shading with our color pallets. Acrylic is fun to work with because it dries fairly quickly, allowing you to adjust your colors however you would like by dabbing on lighter or darker colors (it also allows you to fix your mistakes easily, as you can fully paint over what you don't like).

Overall, I found the experience to be lots of fun, and surprisingly relaxing. I was actually proud of my final product (this is rare with anything artistic I do!), and it is now hanging up in the hallway of my house. It was challenging for me to step out of my comfort zone, and explore the world of painting -- but once I did I found that I am interested in exploring this new world more. Maybe I am DABBING my way towards a new hobby?

UPDATE

1) make (something) more modern or up to date

Although this blog post is not super exciting -- I feel like I have been slacking on my posting, which is weighing heavily on my conscious. Therefore, this update is probably more for myself than anything else.

The primary reason that I have been in a mini-hiatus is that my personal laptop is failing...the ever continuing decline started in November and has reached the point where I am afraid it might not even start up if I turn it on (fingers crossed we get one more start up out of her so I can extract my files!).

That being said, as of yesterday -- I am the owner of a BRAND-SPANKING-NEW laptop, complete with a touchscreen and Windows 8. I have only played with it for an hour, so I have a lot of learning to do but I am very excited about it (I also plan on taking a complementary Windows 8 class, so I can learn about all the goodness I have at my fingertips)!

I have been up to loads of fun stuff, there are good verbs in the hopper, and I am totally feeling inspired!

Fear not, as there is much more to follow this brief...

UPDATE!

RECAP

1) to review by a brief summary, as at the end of a speech or discussion; summarize.
(From the verb "recapitulate")

Despite the fact I was one day late to hop on the "30 Days of Thankfulness" train on Facebook for November --  I am glad it was better late than never. I am not someone who updates their Facebook status frequently, but I could definitely handle a once-a-day mention of something I was thankful for. AND let me tell you, this thankfulness movement made my "news feed" much more enjoyable to read!

In honor of forming a good habit of being thankful for at least one thing everyday, I would like to recap my "30 Days of Thankfulness":

Day 1: I am thankful for my family. I would be nowhere without them.

Day 2: I am thankful for my work. I love going to work everyday: where I am challenged, where I laugh, where I learn, and where I grow. Thank you Hunt Marketing Group (especially Lisa Reeder)!

Day 3: I am thankful for support systems. I am thankful for those who have helped me through the good times and the bad. I am thankful that I can be a shoulder or a smile for my friends and family. Surround yourself with a solid support system.

Day 4: I am thankful for grace. I am thankful for those who are willing to ask for second chances and those who are willing to give to give them (neither of which are easy). Exercising grace with one another makes the world a better place.

Day 5: Today I am thankful for my health. Although I may gripe about being sore or going to the gym, I could not be more thankful to have two arms, two legs, a beating heart, strong lungs, etc. I am especially thankful for happy endorphins!

Day 6: I am thankful that we can call today "election day" because as Americans we have the right to vote. I am thankful for our forefathers who made our nation what it is today, so we can say "government of the people, by the people, for the people".

Day 7: Today I am thankful for my conservative, pro-America college education from Hillsdale College. I am thankful that my collegiate peers are educated on the Constitution and understand the concepts backing free-market economics. I am thankful that there are young people out there that understand: "you cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity", "what one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving", "the government cannot give to anyone anything that the government does not first take away from some else", and "you cannot multiply wealth by diving it". I will remain hopeful...

Day 8: Today I am thankful for memories. I have had the chance to experience so many awesome things in my life -- and I have the pictures to prove it! One of my favorite memories from the past year was doing the Big Climb Seattle for Leukemia & Lymphoma in honor of my SURVIVOR Uncle. Who wants to join me this year to make more positive and amazing memories?!

Day 9: Today I am thankful for our service men and women. Because of you we still call America "the land of the free and home of the brave".

Day 10: I am thankful to be a Pi Beta Phi. Spending time with Washington Alpha made me miss Michigan Alpha tons. You girls are amazing. XOXO & PPL.

Day 11: This day and every day I am thankful for our Veterans. Now I think the Seahawks should win in their honor. Hug your veteran today!

Day 12: “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”-Marcel Proust / I am thankful for people who make me happy and I am also thankful for quotes. I LOVE a good quote.

Day 13: Today I am thankful that I live in Seattle. I am continually awestruck by this city's natural beauty. Happy 161st Birthday Seattle!

Day 14: I am thankful for Wednesdays. I am thankful for the weekly get togethers that Shann, Jo and I started -- and Jordan and I continue while nurse Shann is in Spokane. Cheers to Wednesdays!

Day 15: I am thankful for the real things -- “The real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.” -Laura Ingalls Wilder

Day 16: I am thankful for being INDEPENDENT.

Day 17: I am thankful for peace and quiet.

Day 18: I am thankful for my time as a barista at Starbucks. I have learned a lot about myself and others while working here. I told myself I would only stay for a year...but then I couldn't leave. Thanks to all those who made my time here awesome -- it has been a pleasure. After today I hang up my green (or red actually...) apron. (You can read my blog post about leaving Starbucks here!)

Day 19: I am thankful for 3 DAY WEEKS! Phew!

Day 20: I am thankful for my five senses.

Day 21: I am thankful for reunions. I LOVE the holidays because I get to see so many faces I miss throughout the year. Tonight's reunion includes dollfaces I have not seen since 7th grade! AH!

Day 22: Dried onions, green beans..LET ME SEE YOU CASSEROLE!!! Today I am thankful for green bean casserole!

Day 23: I am thankful for four days out of Lake City, breakfast and lunch dates with my mentors, movies with family, leftovers (can you tell I love green bean casserole?!), time to blog by the fire, Life of Pi 3D... oh and more green bean casserole.

Day 24: I am thankful that I am the hero of my story.

Day 25: I am thankful for blogs. I love stumbling upon a new inspirational blog, following my friends and their adventures via their blogs, and having people support me as I blog. Do you have a blog? I want to follow you! And I would love if you would follow me!

Day 26: I received a card in the mail from a sorority sister and it made me realize how thankful I am for communication, whether it be text messages, skype, email, or good old fashioned letters. Lets all do a better job of utilizing our communication channels! Want an email or letter? PLEASE get me your email address and or home address and I will write you something!

Day 27: I am thankful for sleep. I don't know what I would do if I was an insomniac. I LOVE MY SLEEP.

Day 28: I am thankful that my Uncle Tiger BEAT leukemia. I will do everything I can to support this cause and help fund research so others can BEAT leukemia. PLEASE support my team!

Day 29: Today I am thankful for rain. I absolutely love rain. I love the smell, the sound, and the cozy feeling it evokes. I also love that rain means it is too warm to snow!

Day 30: Today I am thankful for lazy four-day weekends. I am also thankful for the habit I have formed of recognizing at least one thing to be thankful for everyday. It may not show in my status, but it will continue in my heart and mind.

Well, thats a wrap! "30 days of Thankfulness" complete -- and it was a lot of fun! Next month's challenge is on Instgram, so at the end of the month I will be sure to....
