LOCK

1) fasten or secure (something) with a lock
2) make or become rigidly fixed or immovable

Although these pictures are late from our Mother's Day Celebration -- which is already over a month ago! -- I couldn't help but share.

We had absolutely beautiful weather as we set out to the park to celebrate Mom. We wanted a park that had water/a view, a park area (for sitting or frisbee), and a nice walk -- which lead us to Chambers Bay. Our favorite part was the pedestrian bridge because people have begun to put love locks on the cables -- almost as cool as the bridge fencing at Paris' Pont des Arts. Getting a love lock is definitely want to do someday with my sweetie and it provided some nice symbolism for our family as we talked about the love we share.

If you are looking for a park recommendation, you should check out Chambers Bay. And while you are grabbing your picnic blanket and kite, don't forget a love LOCK.

SING

1) to utter words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice
2) to perform a song or voice composition
3) to produce melodious sounds, usually high in pitch
4) to compose poetry
5) to tell about or praise someone or something in verse or song

Back in December, I managed to convince my sisters to buy Ellie Goulding with me. Although they didn't listen to much of her music, and I did barely more than they -- I still thought it would a fun concert for us to attend, just us sisters.

Over the coming months, I started to listen to Ellie more and more -- and getting beyond excited. Little did I know, my sisters were starting to feel the same way! There is something special about the quality of her artistry, something unique about her vocal range, and something praiseworthy about the variety of her songs. And, she has been popping up everywhere in the last few months: the Catching Fire soundtrack, the Diverget soundtrack, my Nike+ running app -- you name it!

Fast-forward to concert day -- my sisters met me downtown for happy hour at Dragonfish (yummy! and they have a great happy hour menu) then headed out to the theater. The balcony seats at the Paramount were general admission, so we knew we were going to have to stand in line (in the rain) in order to get good seats. Once the doors opened, we quickly rushed to the balcony where my sister snagged us front-row balcony seats!
Ellie Goulding is one of the BEST performers I have seen (besides Macklemore, of course)! I was blown away at how captivating she is and how this petite 5' 5" girl commanded the theater with even the tiniest gesture. She sang, she told stories, she played drums and guitar, but most importantly she shared her music with us. Her performance was raw and it was real. At times she invited us to jump around and dance with her, and at other points we sat at the edge of our seats with tears in our eyes as she opened her heart. It you have the opportunity to see her -- YOU MUST!

Truth be told, I haven't been able to stop listening to her since her concert. Every time I go running, I am shuffling through her music (both of my last 10ks have been fuled by Elllie) and at work I am stuck on my Ellie Goulding Pandora station. Maybe her illuminati tricks have gotten to me (ha!), or perhaps she simply possesses a voice that was created to SING.

TANGO

1) to dance the tango
2) to execute movements of the tango, a dance of Latin-American origin, danced by couples, and having many varied steps, figures, and poses
3) to move the body in duple time, characterized by long gliding steps and sudden pauses

Although Valentine's Day was a month ago, I still have to share how much fun I had Tango Dancing!

This year, Sebastian and I celebrated our 6th Valentine's Day together -- and when we were thinking about what we should do, we knew it had to be something outside of the box. Going out to dinner was just not going to cut it. We wanted adventure! Our top three ideas were tango dancing, indoor rock climbing, or a trampoline park. Since we still wanted things to be on the romantic side, tango dancing won out (but don't be surprised when those other ideas make their way into future posts).

I follow a lot of blogs, especially ones that keep me up-to-date on things happening around Seattle. Through this, I found out about Century Ballroom hosting an Argentine Tango and Wine night for Valentine's Day -- perfect!

So after receiving two dozen roses, and going out to dinner (spoiled -- I know), Sebastian and I headed over to Capital Hill with our dancing shoes on.

The first hour was a Tango lesson. We were taught the basics of upper carriage, traveling footwork, and connecting steps. The room was packed with couples -- so the practicing portion was a bit difficult. After a few tries, better communication (yes, I was trying to lead too much), and a couple of questions to the instructor, we had it down!

After the lesson, there was a break for an Argentinian Wine tasting while the band set up. We tasted some wonderful organic wines, but opted for champagne since this was an occasion to be celebrated (and champagne is my favorite)!

Once the Tango Band was set up -- it was time for open dance. This is where we really had fun because we were not limited by space or instructor. It was so fun having live music and people around us who REALLY knew how to tango. Seeing them perform the basics and build upon them into fancier footwork really made us wish we took more lessons.

All in all it was a wonderful evening and I would highly recommend any/all classes at Century Ballroom (salsa, swing, waltz, etc.). If you and your beau are looking for something new, get out there and TANGO!

SAIL

1) to move along or travel over water
2) to manage a sailboat, especially for sport.
3) to begin a journey by water
4) to move along in a manner suggestive of a sailing vessel
5) to move along in a stately, effortless way

It is rare that my family gets out to our beautiful boat (my father's "first daughter") that is moored in stunning, little Gig Harbor. And it is even more rare that we actually sail -- but this day trip with Joy was different.

We got down to the marina early in the day, and it looked as though the sun was not going to make an appearance. After we got underway, we motored around the Commencement Bay area with no real destination. As we all relaxed, I took to the deck for a nap.

The next thing I know -- we are tacking, the sun is shinning, blue skies are out, and the wind is ready to deliver some speed. GLORIOUS!

What a change the break in a day can make -- and what a wonderful day we had out on the water.

With Pacific northwest weather, you truly never know what you are going to get -- and the same goes with life. So take each day as it comes and make the most of it; be prepared to adjust your sails and keep in mind that smooth seas never made a skillful sailor. I am thankful that my parents applied the lessons that we learned on board to our every day lives. Life won't always be a breeze, but remember it's how you adjust your sails that determines where you SAIL!

HOOP

1) to use a hula hoop in the exercise of flow movement
2) to express one's self through artistic movement and dancing with a hoop (or hoops) used as a prop
3) to practice technical moves and tricks with freestyle or technical dancing
4) to rotate the hoop around parts of the body other than the waist, including the hips, chest, neck, shoulders, thighs, knees, arms, hands, thumbs, feet and toes

About a month ago -- my soul sister took a journey across the United States from Morgantown, Virginia to San Diego, California and I was fortunate enough to have almost four days with her as she swung by Seattle on her cross-country road trip (side note: her blog is WAY funnier than mine so you should check it out HERE for some laughs!)

I met Kaitlyn in college, as she was a transfer student and I was trying to rush her for my sorority. The funny thing is the more time I spent talking to her at the open house, the less it became about my sorority and more about how interested I was in wanting to make her my best friend immediately. You know those people that are simply captivating -- she's that kind.

Kaitlyn did end up pledging, and even though we are sorority sisters -- we are much more than that. I have Kaitlyn to thank for stirring my soul, feeding my curiosity, praising my playful side, and most importantly, keeping me honest, genuine and real. OR maybe most importantly, teaching me to hula hoop. This girl is such a keeper.

I cannot even explain how happy I was when I saw a text on my phone that said "I am trekking across the U.S. again and taking the northern route! I think I'll be in Seattle July 20th-ish." WHAT GREAT NEWS!

I started planning immediately and at the heart of my planning was one question "where are the best places for us to hoop together"?

We had a wonderful time, between Dick's Burgers at Kerry Park (past vegetarians unite!), sight-seeing/visiting places from 10 Things I Hate about You, soaking up the sun at bluegrass festival, and laughing at anything and everything. Some things never change -- and I am thankful for that.

I am hoping that Kaitlyn has a big place in her heart for Seattle and will come back to visit soon (for longer!) since she is on the best coast now. Until then I will keep HOOPIN'.

REMEMBER

1) to recall to the mind by an act or effort of memory; think of again
2) to retain in the memory; keep in mind; remain aware of
3) to have (something) come into the mind again

July gave me a lot of treasured memories.

This month traveled to San Francisco to celebrate the 4th with my girls, visited with two sorority sisters who came in from out of town, watched as my best friend said yes to the dress, rooted for my Seahawks as they played softball, sailed with my family, and met the daily Seattle sunshine with a smile.

But my most treasured memory from July was the last hug that I gave to my family's precious little Jack Russell Terrier, Tally.

I remember when we first got Tally -- I was in sixth grade and could NOT WAIT to have a puppy. My oldest sister brought home the most adorable little girl, small enough to fit in my two palms. Tally loved to chase squirrels and hair ties (if you shot them rubber band style), lay like a frog with her landing gear out, and following Bridget where ever she went.

As Tally grew up she became a fighter, as she fought an autoimmune disease that she contracted at age five. Her disease was called Immune Mediated Hemolytic Annemia (IMHA), and was most likely contracted from a tick or other parasite. IMHA causes a dog's white blood cells to destroy its red blood cells, and generally has a 30% survival rate (when she was diagnosed her blood was the color of pink lemonade because she had very few red blood cells left). Tally underwent chemo (which, opposed to humans, causes dogs to retain all hair -- no shedding turned our Jack Russell into a Pomeranian), numerous blood draws to monitor cell counts, and a special diet (egg whites, yams, Cheerios, and the occasional lean meat). Tally not only "beat" IMHA, she lived eight more years.

When I gave Tally her last hug, I said "you get to be with Draven again, chasing squirrels in heaven". It's never easy to say goodbye to a dog, but I know all dogs go to heaven. I will treasure my time with our little lady and let the memories keep me company as I look back on our time with her and REMEMBER.

EXCLAIM

1) to cry out or speak suddenly and vehemently, as in surprise, or strong emotion

May 4th made my heart swell.

On May 4th, one of my very best friends got engaged to her knight in shinning armor. Shannon was given the day she had been waiting for, and it manifested itself on a pier in New Port Beach, CA. I am so thankful there were family members planted nearby who caught the most priceless pictures -- because Shannon, your smile is one of the most beautiful.

I was elated to hear news of her engagement and LOVED talking to her right after it happened. I could hear a smile on her voice and I could hear her heart laugh with excitement. A new chapter is beginning, and it is destined to be a wonderful one.

A few weeks ago Shannon made it home for a visit, and she told me she had an important question for me...

"Will you be my bridesmaid?", she asked. "YES!", I exclaimed.

Shannon, I am beyond thrilled to be one of your bridesmaids. I cannot wait to proudly stand by your side and bear witness to the love that you and KK share. You two have been through fun times and hard times, laughter and tears and I know each moment has made you stronger as a couple. I love the playful nature you and KK share, and most importantly I trust him as a provider and life partner for you.

As you prepare for your wedding day, here is my wish for you:

"Love, be true to her;
Life, be dear to her;
Health, stay close to her;
Joy, draw near to her;
Fortune, find what you can do for her,
Follow her footsteps the wide world over--
And keep her husband always her lover."
-Anna Lewis

I am here for you every step of the way as your best friend and bridesmaid. The countdown is on for your big day when you EXCLAIM, "I DO"!

EMBRACE

1) to take or clasp in the arms; hug
2) to take or receive gladly or eagerly; accept willingly
3) to avail oneself of: to embrace an opportunity
4) to adopt
5) to take in with the eye or the mind

We are already two weeks into July -- and I haven't had the chance to recap June! I am coming to the realization that I just need to give in and embrace life as time files by. There is no stopping time and rather than wishing I could slow things down I need to receive each moment gladly and eagerly.

If you remember, May's focus was to give everything a "try" and to learn how I can better deal with "trying" situations. I want to continue that this month by embracing whatever comes at me, embracing whatever my situation is, and embracing those I love.

I embraced a lot of change in June: my car celebrated its first birthday, Sebastian started Law School, another class of graduates entered the "real world", I painted my wall (more to come on that still!), and much more...

But by far the biggest change I experienced was having my work teammate, mentor, and friend go on maternity leave.

For the majority of projects at work, Lisa and I work together -- everyday. She has taught me everything I know about working at HMG, she has trained me on everything I have learned client services related and she has sharpened me to become the Account Executive I am today. I have her to thank for my professional growth and development thus far in my career.

Not only do we work closely, but we have developed a friendship over the last year and a half that I am absolutely loving. This lady keeps me on my toes and has more zingers than anyone I know. Plus, anyone who can watch "Kittens Inspired by Kiittens" or "the falling Girl Scout Girl" daily, has a special place in my heart.

On June 24th, Lisa and her husband welcomed Hadley Makenna to the world at 8 lbs 10 oz and 20 3/4" tall. She is a beautiful, healthy baby with the longest fingers I have ever seen! I am so thankful that I could be in Lisa's life as she transitioned into motherhood and I am looking forward to watching her raise little Lisa Jr. Thankfully she sends a lot of cute pictures, which makes her maternity leave a little more bearable.

For now, I look forward to the day I get to meet LJ in person, and squeeze her in a loving EMBRACE!

STICK

1) to remain attached by adhesion
2) to hold, cleave, or cling
3) to remain persistently or permanently
4) to remain firm, as in resolution, opinion, statement, or attachment; hold faithfully, as to a promise or bargain

Four years ago I tried bikram for the first time. It was suggested to me by my physical therapist as I was wrapping up treatment. At the time my ankle had freshly healed from a flip flop accident, which resulted in a fractured bone and two torn tendons. I was itching to exercise -- me, not the runner me, wanted to run. I wanted to get my heart rate up, to challenge my body, to work out again in some full capacity. So, "give hot yoga a try" he said.

My physical therapist told me that hot yoga would do more for my weak muscles and healing tendons than anything else. I would get a cardio workout, while strengthening and toning my muscles. You know when you get the feeling something is too good to be true? Well I got that feeling -- but I was wrong.

It was true. Hot yoga absolutely blew my mind. The workout was incredible and left me feeling exhausted, refreshed, and wanting to stick to it. AND for first time students at Hot Yoga Inc., you could try 10 classes for $10? An amazing workout at an incredible price?! Wow.

Unfortunately, once I wrapped up my 10 classes -- I found out that hot yoga was way too expensive for a poor college student to afford. So we broke up, but not a day went by when I didn't think about getting back to it.

Luckily this January, Groupon came to my rescue (as it always does!): twenty classes for $20 at the same studio (different location) where I first tried bikram. I believe in serendipity -- and this was most definitely a serendipitous moment! I was SO happy to get back into the flow, so much so that before my classes ran out I signed up for monthly unlimited, and I haven't looked back.

Practicing hot yoga has changed me, without a doubt. I can see (and I have had others tell me they see it too) a physical difference in my body. I  see toning that I have not seen from any other workout. I can feel a difference in my mental strength. I feel that my mind is willing to push as much as my body is. I feel like I want to stick to whatever challenge I am facing, to persist and to succeed. I have found the combination of both mental and physical strength to simply be still, and to find inner peace. In moments of chaos, I know how to settle my soul. And most importantly, I find that I am constantly humbled in my practice.

My practice was also changed when I purchased "The Mat" from Lululemon. This mat is the most expensive one they sell -- but it is worth every penny. "The Mat" is sticky (and heavy!), so you do not have to use a towel and it wicks away sweat while you are practicing (you can see a crime scene outline of my body from shavasana, and it will disappear by the time I am in eagle). With this mat I can actually feel like a warrior, when I am in my warrior series. Cleaning is simple, with baking soda and water or lemon and water. So simple, yet such a game changer.

I really can't say enough positive things about hot yoga. I am so thankful I have a studio I love, where I want to constantly challenge myself in each class to STICK.

GIDDYAP

1) a command (as to a horse) to go ahead or go faster

Sunday marked the third year of "Fathers' Day at Emerald Downs" for the Bernardy Family. I don't know who initially had the idea to spend Fathers' Day at the horse races but the idea stuck -- and is now a tradition for us.

My absolute favorite part about the races is seeing my tough German father gently pet the noses of the horses or rub their ears. It is so sweet to see his soft side, the side he did not show much of while I was growing up.

I also love seeing how excited my dad gets about the horses -- seeing their strength, beauty, speed, and grace, they are truly amazing animals! We like to head down to the paddocks as the horses get prepped and pick out which horse is "ours". My dad and sisters generally choose by looks while my mom and I go strictly by names. Sometimes, if there is a horse or a name that really catches our eye (ok..ok...we DO look at the odds), we will head up to place our bets quickly before the race begins!

Our favorite way to bet is to pick the three we think we will win, and "put them in a box". This way as long as the three horses you choose place in the top three (in any order) you win! Or we like to pick a horse to win, place, or show -- just depends on how our luck is rolling.

Last year my dad bought each of us girls a fascinators since we love to get gussied up for the races. Of course we had to top that -- so this year we got big hats. I think I am ready for Kentucky, what do you think?

Not only did we celebrate Fathers' Day on Sunday -- but today is my Dad's birthday! I am truly grateful for the way my relationship with my Dad has matured since I graduated from college. I know that my Dad loves me as his youngest daughter, but more and more I see how much he respects me -- and that means more than words could ever express. Respect is a well-sought commodity from him and I work each and every day to make him proud.

Here's to you, Wolfman! Happy Fathers' day and happy birthday Dad! Crank up the Miami Vice and GIDDYAP!

CHEER

1) to salute with shouts of approval, congratulation, triumph, etc.
2) to gladden or cause joy to; inspire with cheer
3) to encourage or incite

4) to become happier or more cheerful

You know those stories you hear about that have you on the edge of your seat? The ones that have your fingers crossed (and your arms, legs, toes, etc.), you know -- just in case it really does work?

You also know those people who you just adore? Like the coworker who turns into a friend (and you find out is your sorority sister) and quickly becomes a role model. The one who pushes you just enough at all the right times in order to help you grow (and gives great blog advice!).

You know the couples that you see and you think to yourself, "they would be AMAZING parents"? You see how wonderful they are as individuals, how whole they become when they are together, and how you secretly wish you could be their child.

Well that couple, the woman, and their story is real. It may not have been the normal "once upon a time" story -- but the part that matters, "happily ever after", is coming true.

Natalie, I could not be more thrilled to hear that you have welcomed Baby G into the world today! Your answered prayer is proving to be one tough little lady and I cannot wait until I have the chance to meet her. You know what William Shakespeare said, right? "Though she be but little, she is fierce!” (You have already seen her throw her arms in the air for victory as she entered the world, undoubtedly also cheering you on for all that you have already done for her.) I know motherhood is going to come so natural to you because I have already seen the patience, kindness, and motivation you give so readily to others.

So here is to you and your complete family. Elliana has quite the fan club already and I hope she knows that I am looking forward to being in the front row. Watching your story unfold is something I am thankful I have had the chance to witness and I can cannot help feeling elated for you. She is here! Healthy and sweet! You know how we have rooted for you along the way, but today is an extra special day to CHEER!

CURE

1) a means of healing or restoring to health; remedy
2) a method or course of remedial treatment, as for disease
3) successful remedial treatment; restoration to health
4) a means of correcting or relieving anything that is troublesome or detrimental: to seek a cure for inflation

This past Sunday I ran 1,311 stairs in 14 minutes and 30 seconds. Insane? Yes! But worth every hard-to-breathe, legs-ready-to-give-out moment as I participated in an event that is VERY near and dear to my heart.

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the BIG CLIMB (Seattle) is one of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's biggest fundraising events every year. The event itself is a stair climb up the Columbia Tower - the tallest skyscraper in downtown Seattle. There are 69 flights of stairs, 1,311 steps, and 788 feet of vertical elevation. This year registration sold out within a matter of weeks, as approximately 6,000 participants gathered in the fight against blood cancers.

Last year my sister and I created "Team Uncle Tiger" in honor of my uncle who was celebrating his first year in remission from leukemia. (Side note: "Uncle Tiger" received his nickname via three-year-old Shannon, as he was wearing a Lacoste polo which obviously meant he was MY Uncle Tiger...needless to say it stuck!) The first time we participated we chose to do the "climbing" side, where the goal is simply to make it to the top. We thought that would be a good place to start. Despite the physical challenge of climbing 69 flights of stairs, you are supported by all those around you as you work your way to the top -- together. When I reached the top (in about 16 minutes and 30 seconds, of course I still timed myself), I was overcome with a rush of happy endorphins which prompted me to announce "let's do the racing side next year!"... Although I knew it would be more challenging on the timed side, I reminded myself that it would pale in comparison to what blood cancer patients, like my Uncle Tiger, go through.

(Additional side note: I will be completely honest -- I believe that no amount of training truly makes the BIG CLIMB any easier. It is simply extremely physically demanding. To prepare, my teammates and I (and supportive friends) would go out to the Howe Street stairs, the longest consecutive set of stairs in the Seattle area. I challenge you to get out and try it! You will get an amazing workout and enjoy a stunning view from the top.)

But this year in addition to the physical rigor, the racing side takes some major mental stamina. Last year on the climbing side, we were sent up in twos which allowed for some comradery as you motivate each other. But the racing side staggers entry one at a time...with most people listening to their headphones -- the combination of those two factors leaves the only motivation in your mind.

At around floor 34, I was ready to throw in the towel. I started too fast and I was really struggling with my breathing (if you run enough stairs, you will become fast friends with "the hack"). But then I remembered that I had a poster made for my uncle and I had yet to see it. With each set of stairs I checked the upcoming wall to see my Uncle Tiger smiling at me...over and over...the more floors I passed without seeing his poster, the more excited I became because"they must have put him at the top!" Once you have ten floors left they have a poster of countdowns for you. With five floors to go you can hear the music from the observatory. At three floors to go I started to run! Finishing at 14 minutes and 30 seconds (proudly just thirty seconds slower than Sebastian).

You are probably wondering about that poster that motivated me to keep pushing? Well, I never saw it. Turns out it was around floor 49 (thankfully my teammates saw it and snapped a quick picture with it), and I had missed it altogether. In the end, the point really wasn't about seeing the poster. I was being motivated by my love for my Uncle Tiger. If he could beat leukemia -- I could run 1,311 stairs.

I get all weepy just thinking about how thankful I am that my Uncle is in remission and how proud I am of my team (raising almost $2,000). In fact, I probably cried three times the day of the event. But regardless of how thankful I am or how blessed we are that my uncle was able to find a perfect bone marrow match -- no progress can be made in the success stories of others without funds for research.

Without funds, there is no research. Without research, there is no cure.

I will continue to participate in the BIG CLIMB (and other LLS events) and I will continue to help raise funds with for this VERY worthy cause. I want to hear more stories of success, like my Uncle Tiger's.

CLIMB. CONQUER. CURE.

GRAB

1) to seize suddenly or quickly; snatch; clutch
2) to obtain and consume quickly
3) to cause a reaction in
4) to arouse the interest or excitement of
5) to make a grasping or clutching motion
6) to take hold suddenly or with a jolting motion

Recently, I have had the opportunity to experience some unique activities. How often do you have the chance to take an aerial hoop class on a Friday and a participate in a Guinness Book of World Records attempt on a Saturday? Life seems to never stop presenting me with activities that grab my attention.

I fell in love with aerial arts last year, when I took a flying trapeze class after I found an awesome deal on Groupon (I know go figure...). There are certain places that you just feel at home, the minute that you walk in...and Emerald City Trapeze seriously is one of those places for me. Something about the atmosphere, grabs me and stirs my soul (maybe that's my inner child, circus performer wanna-be?).

Lo and behold -- another deal appeared for six aerial arts classes (this time it was a Living Social deal.) Just my luck! So last Friday, I finally made it into the aerial dome and I truly could not have been more excited. Five of us made our way into the aerial arts center to stretch and warm up, as Florence and the Machine serenaded us. The mood was calm, although my anticipation was rising, as I couldn't wait to grab hold of the aerial hoop. We learned some basic moves on the silk and then transferred our knowledge to the hoop. The culmination of the evening was entering the hoop, executing two styles of mermaid poses, and gracefully exiting the hoop. All bruises and blisters aside, I loved every minute of my two hour class and I cannot wait to learn more!

Although my body was sore upon waking Saturday morning, nothing was going to slow me down as there was snow in the forecast for Seattle Center! The idea behind "Snow Day" is, why not raise money for a good cause by doing something fun, and possibly record breaking? The world record attempt for holding the largest snow ball fight doubled as a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County. What better way is there to raise money for kids than to remember what it felt like to be a kid during a coveted snow day?!

The day was full of fun, as it was quite a sight to see Seattle Center blanketed in white. As night fell, we began to grab snow and start forming our ammo. The countdown began, and one solid minute of snow-ball fighting ensued! I will be completely honest in saying that it was truly indescribable, so I invite you to see it for yourself HERE!

The ending stats are as follows:
"$50,000+ RAISED for the Boys and Girls Clubs of King County
5,834 SNOWBALL fighters (NEW World Record)
90 SECONDS to break the world record
81 TONS of snow harvested from the Cascade Mountains
11 BARS were crawled to and from by thirsty warriors
1 RECORD in a snowless city"

What has GRABBED your attention lately?!

MERRY

1) to cause the feeling of cheerfulness or gaiety in spirit
2) to create laughing happily, festively joyous moments, and/or a merrytime at the party
3) to bring happiness and/or delight

The past holiday season was, without a doubt, the busiest holiday season I have ever experienced -- but it was also one of the very best. Full of merry-ing and marrying (ok ok, so maybe "merry" isn't an actual verb, but go with it)!

The week before Christmas, I flew out to Chicago to see my beautiful Big sister from my sorority tie the knot with her prince charming! And if that isn't awesome enough I got to stay with my Little sister for the week, as they are both from the Chicago area. This trip was a SERIOUS Michigan Alpha Pi Beta Phi reunion and my heart is still bursting with happiness from those six days of merry-ing.

It is crazy to think that it has been at least two years since I have seen some of those girls, although it genuinely felt as if I saw them yesterday. While we were in college I spent practically every waking moment with my girls. In many ways, my sisters made my college experience complete and I truly cannot imagine life without them. My Big and I used to always sing this one song we liked to each other...it kind of began as a funny thing we did, then we made it "our thing", and then I think the more we sang it the more it actually became true..."I can change your life, if you'll let me..."

I arrived Tuesday evening, spent time with my Little's family on Wednesday, went to the bachelorette party on Thursday night (thankfully the world didn't end!), spent time in Chicago with my Little on Friday, attended the wedding on Saturday, and flew home Sunday. Although I would have loved more time with my girls, it just made us promise even more that we would plan another reunion...SOON!

I am so very thankful I could be present on my Big's special day. Besides the fact that she looked stunning beyond words, every last detail was perfect: from the post card themed guest book, to the chalk boards with adorable sayings on them, to the shout outs to "the bride's college girls", to the sparkler send off. The only thing more perfect than the wedding day is the love these two have for each other.

Big -- I hope your day was everything that you dreamed it would be because in my humble opinion, it was flawless. I cannot wait until I get to see you again but until then... I will start practicing spelling your new last name!

The holiday season is always very busy, but remember to make time to...
MERRY!

RECAP

1) to review by a brief summary, as at the end of a speech or discussion; summarize.
(From the verb "recapitulate")

Despite the fact I was one day late to hop on the "30 Days of Thankfulness" train on Facebook for November --  I am glad it was better late than never. I am not someone who updates their Facebook status frequently, but I could definitely handle a once-a-day mention of something I was thankful for. AND let me tell you, this thankfulness movement made my "news feed" much more enjoyable to read!

In honor of forming a good habit of being thankful for at least one thing everyday, I would like to recap my "30 Days of Thankfulness":

Day 1: I am thankful for my family. I would be nowhere without them.

Day 2: I am thankful for my work. I love going to work everyday: where I am challenged, where I laugh, where I learn, and where I grow. Thank you Hunt Marketing Group (especially Lisa Reeder)!

Day 3: I am thankful for support systems. I am thankful for those who have helped me through the good times and the bad. I am thankful that I can be a shoulder or a smile for my friends and family. Surround yourself with a solid support system.

Day 4: I am thankful for grace. I am thankful for those who are willing to ask for second chances and those who are willing to give to give them (neither of which are easy). Exercising grace with one another makes the world a better place.

Day 5: Today I am thankful for my health. Although I may gripe about being sore or going to the gym, I could not be more thankful to have two arms, two legs, a beating heart, strong lungs, etc. I am especially thankful for happy endorphins!

Day 6: I am thankful that we can call today "election day" because as Americans we have the right to vote. I am thankful for our forefathers who made our nation what it is today, so we can say "government of the people, by the people, for the people".

Day 7: Today I am thankful for my conservative, pro-America college education from Hillsdale College. I am thankful that my collegiate peers are educated on the Constitution and understand the concepts backing free-market economics. I am thankful that there are young people out there that understand: "you cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity", "what one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving", "the government cannot give to anyone anything that the government does not first take away from some else", and "you cannot multiply wealth by diving it". I will remain hopeful...

Day 8: Today I am thankful for memories. I have had the chance to experience so many awesome things in my life -- and I have the pictures to prove it! One of my favorite memories from the past year was doing the Big Climb Seattle for Leukemia & Lymphoma in honor of my SURVIVOR Uncle. Who wants to join me this year to make more positive and amazing memories?!

Day 9: Today I am thankful for our service men and women. Because of you we still call America "the land of the free and home of the brave".

Day 10: I am thankful to be a Pi Beta Phi. Spending time with Washington Alpha made me miss Michigan Alpha tons. You girls are amazing. XOXO & PPL.

Day 11: This day and every day I am thankful for our Veterans. Now I think the Seahawks should win in their honor. Hug your veteran today!

Day 12: “Let us be grateful to people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”-Marcel Proust / I am thankful for people who make me happy and I am also thankful for quotes. I LOVE a good quote.

Day 13: Today I am thankful that I live in Seattle. I am continually awestruck by this city's natural beauty. Happy 161st Birthday Seattle!

Day 14: I am thankful for Wednesdays. I am thankful for the weekly get togethers that Shann, Jo and I started -- and Jordan and I continue while nurse Shann is in Spokane. Cheers to Wednesdays!

Day 15: I am thankful for the real things -- “The real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.” -Laura Ingalls Wilder

Day 16: I am thankful for being INDEPENDENT.

Day 17: I am thankful for peace and quiet.

Day 18: I am thankful for my time as a barista at Starbucks. I have learned a lot about myself and others while working here. I told myself I would only stay for a year...but then I couldn't leave. Thanks to all those who made my time here awesome -- it has been a pleasure. After today I hang up my green (or red actually...) apron. (You can read my blog post about leaving Starbucks here!)

Day 19: I am thankful for 3 DAY WEEKS! Phew!

Day 20: I am thankful for my five senses.

Day 21: I am thankful for reunions. I LOVE the holidays because I get to see so many faces I miss throughout the year. Tonight's reunion includes dollfaces I have not seen since 7th grade! AH!

Day 22: Dried onions, green beans..LET ME SEE YOU CASSEROLE!!! Today I am thankful for green bean casserole!

Day 23: I am thankful for four days out of Lake City, breakfast and lunch dates with my mentors, movies with family, leftovers (can you tell I love green bean casserole?!), time to blog by the fire, Life of Pi 3D... oh and more green bean casserole.

Day 24: I am thankful that I am the hero of my story.

Day 25: I am thankful for blogs. I love stumbling upon a new inspirational blog, following my friends and their adventures via their blogs, and having people support me as I blog. Do you have a blog? I want to follow you! And I would love if you would follow me!

Day 26: I received a card in the mail from a sorority sister and it made me realize how thankful I am for communication, whether it be text messages, skype, email, or good old fashioned letters. Lets all do a better job of utilizing our communication channels! Want an email or letter? PLEASE get me your email address and or home address and I will write you something!

Day 27: I am thankful for sleep. I don't know what I would do if I was an insomniac. I LOVE MY SLEEP.

Day 28: I am thankful that my Uncle Tiger BEAT leukemia. I will do everything I can to support this cause and help fund research so others can BEAT leukemia. PLEASE support my team!

Day 29: Today I am thankful for rain. I absolutely love rain. I love the smell, the sound, and the cozy feeling it evokes. I also love that rain means it is too warm to snow!

Day 30: Today I am thankful for lazy four-day weekends. I am also thankful for the habit I have formed of recognizing at least one thing to be thankful for everyday. It may not show in my status, but it will continue in my heart and mind.

Well, thats a wrap! "30 days of Thankfulness" complete -- and it was a lot of fun! Next month's challenge is on Instgram, so at the end of the month I will be sure to....

HOLD

1) Grasp, carry, or support with one's arms or hands

One Friday evening after work, I hopped into my car and drove down to the Valley Medical Birth Center see my good friend of eight years and her one-day-old newborn. This was the first time I have visited a family and newborn in the hospital - and it was such a special moment to share.

Little Mr. Kyson Cole Fields is absolutely beautiful - a truly perfect happy and healthy newborn. I am so proud of Erin and I can already see that she is going to be an amazing mother. I am looking forward to visiting with them again around Thankgiving and to see him in the onesie I made for him, but most of all I can't wait for lots of hugs and more time to...
HOLD.

REVEL

1) to take great pleasure or delight
2) to make merry; indulge in boisterous festivities

This evening I had some down time. As I sat in my room, flipping through pictures from the last month, I couldn't help but revel in some of the amazing memories I have recently created -- with two of my favorites from one very special weekend in mid-October.

This truly has got to be the good life.

On Friday, October 12th, I had the opportunity to witness a historical musical event. I bought my pre-sale tickets for this concert the very MINUTE they went on sale in May and I could not contain my excitement throughout the following months. I had been waiting to see my favorite performer since I missed him at Bumbershoot in 2009. Little did I know that throughout the upcoming months, this favorite hip hop artist of mine would go from "Seattle Underground" to "Number 1 on iTunes Nation-Wide"! "The Heist" was SOLD-OUT at WAMU Theater... 7,000+ tickets were sold. Absolutely amazing! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are a true testament to the art form of music. If you create something powerful, good, true, raw, and honest, people cannot help but listen, connect, and support. The night of the concert is one that will last in my memory forever. It may be true that I cried five times throughout the show but it was because I was completely moved by the whole experience. It was stunning to witness the humility with which Macklemore performed -- there were times when he simply stared at the crowd before him, in awe, as his fans sang every word of his songs back to him. Macklemore bared his soul to his hometown that night. Even now, the experience gives me chills and makes my eyes well. There is only one word to describe the event: epic.

The next day Saturday, October 13th, I participated in Mothers Against Drunk Driving's Annual 5k "Walk Like MADD" Event to honor Bawny Brook McQuistin. This may sound neurotic, but I was beyond terrified to do this walk. The first time I participated in "Walk Like MADD" I had the the biggest team and I raised the most money (24 walkers and almost $4,000). The original event fell a few short months after the tragedy so it was still fresh in everyone's minds. I was so anxiety ridden because I didn't want there to be any less involvement than when I first participated five years ago. I was not ready to come to terms with the fact that people have distanced themselves from the loss after all this time. After some serious coaxing, crying and coaching from/with a friend I was reminded why this event is so important. It is not about the numbers, it is about progress, healing, and the cause itself. It is about being forward looking, not past dwelling. As I began talking to friends and family about the event, I was shown that there was nothing for me to be afraid of. Losing a best friend is not easy, everyone knows that. But not everyone knows the support I have been shown as I dealt with this tragedy. I would not be where I am today, five years of being without the smile I cherish, if it were not for my friends and family. Thank you to all of those who listened to my story, and donated time, money and energy. And although I have moved beyond the numbers and I have focused on the deeper importance of the event...you still may be wondering... so I will tell you: I was the top fundraiser and my team was ranked 4th highest in fundraising! Team Bawny has seen much success and I can only attribute the success to those in my support system. I cannot explain how cathartic this experience has been. The day of the event may have been overcast and cloudy, but my heart was warm and my soul smiling.

I hope that as this rainy fall continues, and the dark of the evenings creep in quicker with each dusk, that you have the chance to curl up in a blanket and take time to reflect on some wonderful moments you have created. And as you conjure up all the emotions, senses, and visions from the occasions, I hope you truly stop, enjoy the memory, and...
